CDs Reviews D DEAD FRIENDS Pop Corpse CD This is weird, even by our standards and, as a result comes highly recommended to nowt but our most adventurous customers… A shame, I know, but it's usually best to describe by comparison, even when there's something quite unique, which is sure the case of DEAD FRIENDS. 6 tracks of the imaginative & unexpected, vocally a surreal, almost operatic growl from Dung (who also plays guitar) which puts me in mind of a muppet version of NOMEANSNO and TERMINUS. Musically, it's more MAGAZINE than anything (perhaps due to the prominence of the keyboards), with a smattering of ALICE DONUT fo added quark, strangeness & charm. Certainly the kinda thing you've come to expect from Alternative Tentacles, but is totally DIY from Carlisle. For the weird, experimental & brave of you. DISRUPTIVE ELEMENT Disruptive Element If this band weren't so busy practicing exactly what they preached, then they would be be bigger than CHUMBA; all-round appeal anarcho-punk for the masses. This AWE-inspiring 7 song CD has a certain something pretty much everyone can enjoy; raw punk a la THE PARTISANS, successfully combined with BLIND MOLE RAT/LEVELLERS folk punk and the highly infectious ska-punk of SPITHEAD and CITIZEN FISH. Hard-hitting yet upbeat, this'll inspire you to leap about and then go out and smash the state - not many bands can achieve both, but with rabble-rousers "Work makes you Free", "Soldiers of the Lord" and "Test Tube Future", DISRUPTIVE ELEMENT are a folk/ska/politico-punk force with which to be reckoned…. |
