PUNKS, SKINS & HERBERTS Vol.4 Take A Look At Life...

Vol.2 just slipped straight passed me & I missed my chances with vol.3 (Darn! That             included THE BLOODCLOTS too!), so you gotta be quick with these now-legendary Helen of Oi! compilation LPs. This, the latest instalment from the street, inc. the USA's BRASS TACKS (real punchy Yank Punk, like US BOMBS) and THE M.F.C. (also USA, very CHANNEL 3/VIOLATORSesque), plus Scottish oi-sters ON FILE (very                          reminiscent of RED LONDON) and fellow highland-flingers BEERGUT 100 (classic                         EXPLOITED/VARUKERS hybrid).

A SCREAM FROM THE SILENCE Vol. 4 Compilation

Apparently the penultimate in this commendable DIY series, which is a shame as each volume gets better. This time round, it's the turn of my tour buddies ULICA (Poland), gig chums BLOODSHOT (Scot), plus complete strangers (but brilliant) GOB ART (Portugal), NO CONFORMITY (Brazil), BLESS MY BRAIN (Germany), AKTIFIST (Scot), EVERGREEN INC. (Sweden), BLUE GRAPE (Germany), FALL OUT (England) and uh-oh, you guessed it, THE BUS STATION LOONIES (England)...... Still, it is only £2.50.

SH*T GETS SMASHED   Compilation

Impressive gathering of 10 punk bands from the San Francisco East Bay area (18 trax in total), featuring STRYCHNINE, MULTI-FACET, APE FACE, MICKEY & THE BIG MOUTHS, HOT ROD SHOPPING CART, OJOROJO, SQUAT, LOADED,                                    MASTERBAITER and EL DOPA. Loadsa new US bands well worth checking-out!                                                                                                         SIMBIOSE/CROUSTIBAT split 10"                                                                                                      Look Mummy, a ten-inch! 2 ripping Portuguese bands on 1 ripper of a Poruguese label (Zero Work… hmm, I like the sound of that!). SIMBIOSE, who some of you lucky souls have encountered via us before are an intense headfirst tumble into the realms of fast, tight and top-notch crust (think HEALTH HAZARD, FASTARD and TOXIC NARCOTIC all having a race). Their politically-motivated hardcore attack throws one song headlong into the next, without so much of a breather. Exhilarating stuff too from the similarly motivated and comparatively-sounding COROUSTBAT. If anything, these fellas are even more wrenching; HIATUS and FORCED EXPRESSION competing for the                      sore-ears, nose & throat awards. Moments of pure AMEBIX-inspired gloomy'n'chug…                If you likes yer punk hard & heavy, this beaut is a must!

SUBKUTAN Subkutan 10"

Chris hasn't reviewed this yet, and I can't tell you much about it, except I was                 pleasantly surprised by the diverse and interesting tracks. The lyrics are in German, but the sounds appeal to me. Try one for yourself, please, as the sleeve shows the tracklistings on some bloke's rather unattractive back-side, and it's fair putting me off my elevenses.          H.
